The first thing you notice about Predjama is its location.

The castle appears to grow directly out of the cliff face, with the limestone rock forming part of the building itself. Behind the castle is a network of caves and passages, while the steep cliffs provided a natural defence against anyone attempting to attack from outside.

It is this combination of castle, cave, and cliff that makes Predjama so memorable.

Europe has many spectacular castles, but few are built into the entrance of a natural cave. Predjama feels less like a traditional castle placed on top of a hill and more like a building shoehorned into the landscape.

The surrounding countryside adds to the experience. Predjama Castle stands in a wooded karst landscape, with the dramatic limestone cliffs providing an impressive backdrop.

The story of Erasmus of Predjama

Predjama Castle is closely associated with Erasmus of Predjama, a 15th-century knight and nobleman.

According to the traditional story, Erasmus fell out with the Habsburg authorities after killing a member of the imperial court. He subsequently retreated to Predjama Castle, where its extraordinary defensive position allowed him to resist a siege.

The caves behind the castle were particularly important. They provided concealed passages allowing people to bring supplies into the castle from the outside.

The siege is said to have lasted over a year.

Eventually, according to the legend, Erasmus was betrayed. His enemies supposedly discovered where he went to the toilet and fired a cannon into the castle, killing him.

It is difficult to separate fact from centuries of storytelling, but the legend is an important part of the character of Predjama Castle. Inside the castle, you can learn more about Erasmus and the castle’s history while exploring the rooms and defensive areas.

Is Predjama Worth Visiting – The Church of Our Lady of Sorrows

A little way down the hill from the castle is a small church. the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows was consecrated in the 15th century and legend has it, is the final resting place of Erasmus of Predjama.

In its grounds, you’ll see an ancient yew tree, reputedly 1000 years old, which some say is the oldest in Slovenia

What is Predjama Castle like to visit?

Predjama isn’t a grand royal palace filled with huge state rooms. Instead, it feels like a fortress designed for survival.

The interior contains reconstructed rooms, furniture, weapons, and other exhibits illustrating life in the castle. As you move through the building, you can see how the architecture adapts to the natural rock.

One of the most interesting aspects is the relationship between the castle and the cave behind it. The rock isn’t simply scenery outside the windows; it forms an integral part of the building and its defences.

There are several levels to explore, with stairs and narrow passages along the way.

For me, the setting is the real star of the attraction. Coming from Wales, home of some of the most spectacular castles in the world, I’m not easily impressed by them when I travel. But seeing Predjama castle, apparently emerging from the mouth of a cave is considerably harder to forget.

How long do you need at Predjama Castle?

Allow around 1 to 1½ hours for a visit.

You can walk through the castle relatively quickly, but rushing isn’t really worthwhile. There are plenty of details to look at, and the unusual construction makes it worth taking your time.

If you’re combining Predjama Castle with Postojna Cave, I’d allow most of a day for the two attractions, particularly if you are travelling independently.

This also gives you some flexibility around the cave tour times rather than trying to fit the castle into a very tight schedule.

The two attractions are only about 9 km apart, making them an obvious combination.

If you’re planning to visit Postojna Cave, I’d strongly consider adding Predjama Castle to your itinerary if you have the time.

The attractions offer very different experiences:

Postojna Cave takes you underground, with its famous cave railway, enormous chambers, stalactites, stalagmites, and the opportunity to see the olm.

Predjama Castle takes you into the history of the area, showing how the natural caves and cliffs were incorporated into a medieval fortress.

Together, they provide a fascinating introduction to Slovenia’s karst landscape.

How to get to Predjama Castle

Predjama Castle is approximately 9 km from Postojna.

By Car

Driving is probably the easiest option if you have your own vehicle or a hire car. The journey from Postojna is short, and the castle has parking nearby.

Driving also gives you greater flexibility if you want to combine Predjama with other attractions in the region.

By Shuttle Bus

Seasonal tourist shuttle services can connect Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle, particularly during the busier tourist season.

These services can be extremely useful if you are travelling without a car, but timetables vary during the year. Check the current schedule before travelling.

By Taxi

A taxi from Postojna is another practical option if the shuttle isn’t operating when you visit. If you are staying in Postojna, ask your accommodation about local taxi services and the cost of a return journey.

Can you visit Predjama Castle from Ljubljana?

Yes. Predjama makes a possible day trip from Ljubljana, although you’ll need to allow considerably more time than if you’re staying in Postojna.

Postojna is approximately 55 km from Ljubljana, making the area relatively easy to reach from the Slovenian capital.

If you’re travelling independently, you can travel from Ljubljana to Postojna by train or bus and then arrange onward transport to the castle.

Another option is an organised day trip from Ljubljana that combines Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle. This can be particularly convenient if you don’t have a car and want to see both attractions in one day. I did this one which worked really well because we were first into the castle. The narrow corridors and steps get very crowded when the tour buses arrive. You may see some tours cheaper than this, but they usually don’t include the entrance price to the cave and castle.

How much time should you spend in the area?

If you’re simply visiting Predjama Castle as part of a larger Slovenia itinerary, half a day is enough for the castle and travelling to and from the site.

However, if you’re visiting Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle together, I’d make them a full-day excursion rather than trying to squeeze them into a few hours.

This is especially true if you’re travelling independently and using public transport, because connections may not be as frequent as you would like.

If you have more time, there are other attractions in Slovenia’s Karst region that can be added to your itinerary.

Is Predjama Castle suitable for older travellers?

Predjama Castle is certainly worth considering for older travellers, but there are some practical points to be aware of.

There are stairs, uneven surfaces, and narrow passages inside the castle. I’m in my 60s and consider myself relatively fit and agile, but some of the steps and passages were challenging. If you are there at a busy time, the difficulties could multiply.

It isn’t the sort of attraction where you can simply walk along a flat route from room to room.

If you have significant mobility problems, the castle is not a good option. The official site states that it is not accessible.

For reasonably mobile older travellers, however, I found that the castle was manageable. The castle is relatively small, so distances aren’t an issue. The stairs and uneven surfaces mean comfortable shoes are important.

I’d also avoid trying to combine the castle and Postojna Cave on an overly ambitious schedule. Giving yourself plenty of time makes the day considerably more enjoyable.

What should you wear to visit Predjema Castle?

Even if you’re visiting Slovenia during the summer, take a light layer with you.

The castle itself isn’t as cold as Postojna Cave, but the cave environment and stone construction can make some areas feel cool.

Wear appropriate footwear. You’ll encounter stairs, uneven floors and stone surfaces, so this isn’t the place for shoes with slippery soles.

If you’re visiting Predjama and Postojna Cave on the same day, definitely take a jacket or fleece. Postojna Cave remains around 10°C throughout the year, so you’ll appreciate having something warm to put on for the underground section of your day.

When is the best time to visit Predjama Castle?

The main tourist season is the busiest period, particularly during the summer.

If you want a quieter experience, visiting earlier in the day or during the shoulder months can make sense.

One advantage of visiting early is that you can explore the castle before large groups arrive. This makes it easier to appreciate the unusual architecture and take photographs without constantly waiting for people to move through the rooms.

The weather is also worth considering. The castle is spectacular in almost any conditions, but its position beneath the limestone cliffs can look particularly atmospheric on an overcast day.

Is Predjama Castle worth visiting on its own?

If you are a keen castle enthusiast, yes.

If castles aren’t normally a major interest, I’d be more inclined to visit Predjama as part of a combined trip with Postojna Cave.

The castle’s greatest attraction isn’t an enormous collection of treasures or lavish interiors. It is the setting. A medieval castle built into a cave beneath a limestone cliff is unusual enough to justify the visit.

Is Predjama Castle worth visiting with Postojna Cave?

For most visitors to the area, combining the two makes considerable sense.

Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle complement one another rather than competing for your attention.

At Postojna, you experience the extraordinary geology of the Karst region from underground. At Predjama, you see how people adapted that same landscape for defence.

If you only have time for one attraction, your choice will depend on your interests. Postojna Cave offers a bigger and more elaborate visitor experience, while Predjama offers something much more focused on history, architecture, and its extraordinary setting.

If you have a full day available, however, I’d visit both.

Where to Stay for Predjama Castle

If you are planning to visit Predjama Castle and Postojna Cave, Postojna is the most convenient place to stay. The town has a good choice of hotels, guesthouses and apartments, and staying overnight means you don’t have to rush between the two attractions.

Staying in Postojna is particularly useful if you’re travelling without a car, as you can arrange transport to Predjama Castle and spend more time exploring the area.

Ljubljana is another option, particularly if you’re planning Predjama as a day trip. However, staying in Postojna gives you more flexibility and makes it easier to visit both Predjama Castle and Postojna Cave without spending as much time travelling.

If you’re booking accommodation through a hotel booking site, compare properties in Postojna rather than searching only for Predjama Castle, as there is considerably more choice in the nearby town.
