Sao Tome and Principe Hotels

The tropical islands of Sao Tome and Principe are a little-known paradise nestled in the Gulf of Guinea. A recent United Nations survey ranked the nation as the 8th least-visited country in the world. This is an unfortunate statistic, considering how truly special it is. However, tourism is slowly increasing. This is particularly true for ecotourism. The islands’ wealth of endemic species draws nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts. It’s no surprise these islands have earned the nickname “Africa’s Galápagos”.

That said, the tourism infrastructure remains in its infancy, and the standard of accommodation can vary. During my visit to both islands, I stayed in a range of Sao Tome and Principe hotels, from basic eco-lodges to modern resorts. Here are my top recommendations for Sao Tome and Principe hotels. These curated hotels offer memorable stays in this off-the-beaten-path destination.

Hotel Central – Sao Tome City

Hotel Central in Sao Tome City features local art throughout

True to its name, Hotel Central is situated in the heart of Sao Tome City. This makes it a convenient base for travellers wanting to explore the compact capital. Attractions such as the central market, the Governor’s Palace, and the National Museum of Sao Tome are all within easy walking distance.

The hotel features a ground-floor café, popular with locals and a restaurant where a complimentary breakfast is served. This typically incorporates fruit, toast, preserves, and coffee or tea. The hotel’s décor incorporates local artwork, including portraits of Sao Tomean poets in the breakfast room.

Rooms are all en suite and include air conditioning and Wi-Fi as standard. Hotel Central is a well-located, modestly priced option among Sao Tome and Principe hotels.

Hotel Pestana Miramar – Sao Tome City

Operated by the Portuguese Pestana Group, Hotel Pestana Miramar is one of the top-rated Sao Tome and Principe hotels and a preferred choice for business travellers and UN staff.

Set amid lush tropical gardens, the hotel offers a large swimming pool, a spa, gym, and an in-house dive centre called Dive Tribe, which organises snorkelling, diving, and boat excursions.

Dining options include two bars and Le Baron restaurant, which serves local and Portuguese cuisine, including themed nights like Sao Tomean buffets and traditional Portuguese stews.

Rooms are stylish and well-equipped, with views of the garden, pool, or sea. The presidential suite even overlooks the Portuguese Embassy. If you’re after European-style comfort in an African island setting, Pestana Miramar is an excellent choice.

Hotel Kenito – Sao Tome City

Located just outside the city centre, Hotel Kenito offers excellent value for money with spacious rooms, a swimming pool, and a sunbathing area—all for a similar price to more central options.

Rooms come with air conditioning, en suite bathrooms, and free Wi-Fi, which was reliable during my stay. Breakfast is served poolside for an additional fee, and the reception also serves as a bar. Guests can exchange currency into the local Dobra, although availability is cash-dependent.

The hotel grounds are secure with an automated gate. Free parking is available outside, in a very quiet area next to an army barracks. Despite its slightly less convenient location, Hotel Kenito stands out among budget-friendly Sao Tome and Principe hotels.

N’Guembú Nature Resort – Porto Alegre

This eco-resort is situated on the southern tip of Sao Tome Island, making it an ideal base for visiting Ilhéu das Rolas, also known as Equator Island. Though simple, the accommodation is charming, with individual cottages perched above two secluded beaches.

Rooms are en suite, with air conditioning and Wi-Fi. This is a pared back operation. You must pre-order meals—mainly freshly caught fish with rice and vegetables—and resort staff are only present at breakfast and dinner.

Despite this, the level of personal service is outstanding. When I encountered a car issue on checkout day, the manager’s brother stepped in to assist and even drove me back to the nearest paved road. For those seeking rustic charm in a breathtaking location, N’Guembú Nature Resort is one of the more unique Sao Tome and Principe hotels.
